Widnes Wild are delighted to announce the re-signing of defenceman Ben McLellan for the 2026/27 season.

The 22-year-old returns for his third season in Widnes after establishing himself as one of the club’s most dependable and consistent performers since arriving at the Jungle. Combining a strong physical presence with excellent skating ability and an unwavering commitment to the team, McLellan has become a key member of the Wild’s defensive unit.

Despite still being just 22 years old, McLellan has already built a reputation as a player Head Coach Tom Jackson can rely on in every situation. His competitive edge, consistency and willingness to put the team first have made him an integral part of the culture being built within the organisation.

Speaking after agreeing to return for the 2026/27 campaign, McLellan said:

“I’m incredibly excited to be back again for the 2026/27 season. I feel what is being built at Widnes is very special and I can’t wait to be playing in front of an amazing set of fans.

Let’s smash this season! 🐾”

Head Coach Tom Jackson believes McLellan’s best hockey is still to come.

“Ben’s impact over the past two seasons has been one of the most consistent positives in our lineup. Since the day he arrived, he’s been a standout performer, reliable, competitive, and always putting the team first. He’s the type of player every coach wants in their group, and I’m genuinely delighted to have him back again this season.

Physically, Ben has all the tools to keep progressing. He’s strong, he skates well, and he’s got the engine to play big minutes when we need him to. What sets him apart is how he applies those tools: he plays hard, he plays honest, and he plays for the badge. That’s why he’s become such an important part of what we’re building.

And just like with WUG, this is the season where I want Ben to push himself into that next level. He’s got the foundation, now it’s about adding a bit more finesse, a bit more detail and rounding out his game so he becomes a real difference-maker every single week. He’s capable of it, and I’m excited to see him take that step.”

Still developing and with his best years ahead of him, McLellan’s return provides another significant boost to the Wild blue line. Having become one of the club’s most reliable defencemen over the past two seasons, he will once again play an important role as Widnes looks to build on the progress made last year and continue pushing towards the top end of the NIHL1 table.

Player sponsorship packages for Ben are now available, offering businesses and supporters the chance to partner with one of the club’s key defencemen. Sponsors will receive exposure across the club’s social media channels, website and matchnight communications throughout the season while supporting the continued growth of hockey in Widnes.

Fans can also secure a piece of the action through the club’s popular Own & Loan scheme. Both McLellan’s home and away jerseys are available for £75 each, giving supporters the opportunity to follow his third season in Widnes before taking ownership of a game-worn jersey at the end of the campaign.
