A Key Part Of The Wild

Widnes Wild are delighted to announce the re-signing of forward Mikey Gilbert for the 2026/27 season.

A player synonymous with the organisation, Gilbert will enter his 10th season in Wild colours this year, further cementing his place as one of the club’s most influential and respected figures.

Over the last decade, Gilbert has played a significant role in the growth of the Widnes Wild both on and off the ice. His commitment to the club and consistent performances have made him an integral part of both the organisation’s identity and development.

The experienced forward heads into the new campaign having already recorded more than 250 points for the Wild, placing him amongst the most productive players in club history. Last season, Gilbert once again demonstrated his value to the team, finishing as the club’s fourth-highest points scorer with 11 goals and 14 assists while continuing to set standards across the roster.

Beyond his contributions on the ice, Gilbert continues to play a crucial role in the wider Widnes Wild structure. Earlier this summer, he was confirmed to continue as Head Coach of the Widnes Wild Academy, a position he has held since 2017.

Under his leadership, the Academy has grown from humble beginnings into a thriving development programme and remains a cornerstone of the club’s long-term vision. His continued involvement across both the senior and junior sections of the organisation provides a vital link in the player pathway that the Wild have worked hard to establish over recent years.

Speaking following confirmation of his return, Gilbert said:

“So excited to be back with the Wild once again. We made some really positive steps in our growth and compete level in the league last season and we are certainly looking to build on that further.

The 2026/27 season will be my 10th with the Wild and I’m hoping to make it the best one yet.

There’s lots of excitement within the club and it’s stepping in the right direction overall for sustainable growth to be imprinted into the club’s identity, growing and investing in the youth while having a good mixture of experience added in with it.

It’s a brilliant place to be with many great people involved both on and off the ice. The group of players are fun, driven and it’s such a good atmosphere on the team.

As always, I’m looking forward to playing in front of the best fans in the league!”

Head Coach Tom Jackson was delighted to secure the return of one of the club’s longest-serving players.

“At this point he’s basically part of the furniture at Widnes, but it’s a pleasure to have Mikey back for another season.

Last season he consistently provided both on and off the ice and I have no doubt that he will be able to find that form again next year.”

As the Wild continue preparations for the 2026/27 campaign, retaining a figure of Gilbert’s experience and influence represents another important piece of the puzzle. Whether contributing on the ice as a player or helping develop the next generation of talent as Academy Head Coach, his impact can be felt throughout the organisation.

Supporters and businesses now have the opportunity to back one of the longest-serving players in Widnes Wild history.

Player sponsorship packages for Mikey are now available, offering a fantastic opportunity to partner with a player who has become synonymous with the club over the last decade. Sponsors will receive exposure across the club’s social media channels, website and matchnight communications throughout the season while supporting the continued growth of hockey in Widnes.

Fans can also get their hands on a piece of the action through the club’s Own & Loan scheme. Both Gilbert’s home and away jerseys are available for £70 each, giving supporters the chance to follow Mikey’s journey throughout the season before being presented with his game-worn jersey at its conclusion.

Everyone at Widnes Wild is delighted to welcome Mikey back for his 10th season with the club, and we look forward to seeing him continue to play a major role both on and off the ice throughout the 2026/27 campaign.
