The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild are pleased to announce the return of utility player #20 Berwyn ‘Bez’ Hughes for the 23/24 season.
This season will be Bez’s 7th consecutive year at the Wild, having played over 200 games in a Widnes jersey and contributing 84 points (35 goals +49 assists).
Hughes is a key player for the wild, known for his flexibility of playing in both a forward and defensive position when needed. Bez is an experienced hockey player, first icing for Flintshire Flames U16 at 12, then moving to Telford for 2 seasons, before playing his first match for Widnes back in 2014. He then spent a year in the USA playing for USP3HL side Charlotte rush in their debut season and has remained at the Wild ever since he returned.
Joey Coulter had the following to say about retaining Bez;
“Bez Hughes is no stranger, very excited to have him back in the line up next season. Bezzy is a natural talent, he has all the tools to play the game and he can be a leader as well – he showed on several occasions last season he could step up and show us the way whether it was vocally or by rolling the sleeves up and digging that little bit deeper. He enjoys playing with that extra responsibility, I’m going to ask a lot more of him this year and everyone is going to see that next level of Bez Hughes, every game.”
Bez Hughes then added;
“Hello once again Wild fans! It’s an absolute honour to once again be asked back, to play in front of the best fans in the league for an 8th season. I am thoroughly looking forward to getting this season underway and looking forward to what I believe to be a promising year for the Wild. This year was always is going to be tough, but a very exciting year for us as a team and will be a very good watch for all you amazing fans. Keep cheering us on and this year that playoff spot is ours!!!! See you all soon – BH20”
