Elementary… Watson’s Wild

Widnes Wild are delighted to announce the signing of forward Luke Watson for the 2026/27 season.

Watson arrives in Widnes after spending the past four seasons with local rivals Blackburn Hawks, bringing with him a wealth of NIHL1 experience and adding another important piece to the Wild roster ahead of the new campaign.

Standing at an imposing 6’7″, Watson brings a strong presence to the lineup alongside valuable experience gained over several seasons competing in NIHL1. His size, competitiveness and ability to make an impact in all areas of the ice will provide another dimension to the Wild squad as preparations continue for the 2026/27 season.

Speaking following his signing, Watson said:

“Firstly, I’d like to go on record and say thank you to the Hawks organisation for the opportunities they provided to me over the last four seasons.

The time is right for a new challenge though, and I’m really excited to be joining Widnes as they look to build on the foundations set over the last couple of years. It’s a great group of lads, with a number of good friends and familiar faces I’ve competed against for years, so it already feels like the right fit.

I’m looking forward to contributing my experience to the team and helping support the younger players as they develop through the new pathways at the club.

Can’t wait to get started, and looking forward to meeting you all at the Jungle!”

Head Coach Tom Jackson believes Watson will add an important new dimension to the squad.

“Luke Watson brings valuable experience and size to our group this season. After several years up the road in Blackburn, I’m looking forward to seeing him pull on a Widnes shirt and play a consistent, meaningful role within our team.

He’s a big presence, he competes hard, and I’m excited to see how he gets on week in, week out as part of our organisation.”

Watson’s arrival is another statement of intent from the Wild as the club continues to strengthen its roster with experienced players who share the organisation’s long-term vision. His experience at NIHL1 level, combined with his willingness to help mentor younger players coming through the club’s pathway, makes him an excellent fit both on and off the ice.

Supporters and businesses now have the opportunity to back one of the Wild’s newest signings for the 2026/27 season.

Player sponsorship packages for Luke are now available, offering businesses and supporters the chance to partner with one of the club’s newest additions. Sponsors will receive exposure across the club’s social media channels, website and matchnight communications throughout the season while supporting the continued growth of hockey in Widnes.

Fans can also secure a piece of the action through the club’s popular Own & Loan scheme. Both Watson’s home and away jerseys are available for £70 each, giving supporters the opportunity to follow his first season in Widnes before taking ownership of a game-worn jersey at the end of the campaign.
