The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild are delighted to announce the return of defenceman #18 Jonathon ‘Johno’ Williamson for the 23/24 season.

Johno played his first season with the Wild last year, signing from NIHL D2 team Altrincham Aces, and made an impressive start to his D1 career, posting 10 points + 19PIMS from 29 games. He first began icing for Peterborough Phantoms U16 in 2007, aged 13, and progressed through their set up, eventually joining their ENL 2 side Peterborough Islanders in 2011.

Williamson took a break from the ice for 4 seasons, then returned back in 2017 to play for Sutton Sting in both the NIHL 1 and 2. Jono was a crucial player on the blue line for Widnes last year and was awarded best defenceman of the 22/23 season for his efforts.

Player-coach Joey Coulter said the following on Jono Williamson’s return:

‘I don’t think anyone will be surprised that we have brought back the Wild’s Defensive player of the year, the coaching team voted unanimously for Jonathon Williamson. Johno’s gameplay is straightforward, and he definitely deserves more recognition for his decision making all over the ice. He calculates the situation quicker than others; understands the style of hockey we want to play and has a good habit of finding pockets of space with his skating ability. From our defensive unit, Johno led our defence in points last season and we expect him to build on that for the upcoming campaign.’

Whilst Jono commented:

‘It’s great to come back for my 2nd season with the Wild. I can see loads of potential within our group and with Joey’s leadership I’m sure we can challenge towards the top of the table. Looking forward to playing in front of the fans and contributing to the team as best I can.’
