The YKK sponsored Widnes Wild are delighted to announce the return of forward #39 Matthew Barlow for the 23/24 season.
The 23/24 season will be Matt’s 3rd consecutive season with Widnes, since joining from NIHL D2 side Bradford Bulldogs in 2021. However, Barlow previously iced for the Wild back in 2017 under Ollie Baron and was part of the squad who won the playoffs that year, contributing 15 points (3 goals + 12 assists) from 30 games.
He first began playing in 2011 for the Manchester Phoenix before switching to the Bulldogs in 2014. During his time at Bradford, Matt recorded 87 points (41 goals + 46 assists) plus 162 PIMS from 63 games. More recently in 2021, Matt was featured in the England U23 team against Denmark as assistant captain. Last season, Matt posted 25 points in his 30 games for Widnes and will be looking to extend this in the upcoming season.
Player-coach Joey Coulter said the following on Barlow:
‘I’m sure every hockey fan in Widnes will be as excited as I am to announce Matty Barlow is back. This guy has an incredible skill set, he’s fun to watch and if he wants it bad enough, he could be one of the top forwards in the league. Great character in the dressing room and I’m looking at him to step up and show more of his leadership qualities during the challenges ahead. We will be working very closely with Matty on and off the ice to reach new heights and instill that winning mentality.’
Meanwhile Matt commented:
‘Coming back to Widnes is like coming home. The last 2 years have become a special place in my career, and I can’t wait to get started with the boys. After a difficult 22/23 I was frustrated and hurt with the way it ended but after maturing it’s made me realise this is our motivation to move forward as a team this year. The hard work is ongoing and I’m looking forward to seeing you all in September!’
