THE RECORD HOLDER RETURNS

Widnes Wild are delighted to announce the re-signing of Assistant Captain Bez Hughes for the 2026/27 season.

A true Wild stalwart, Hughes will enter his 11th season with the club, further extending a remarkable association with the organisation that has seen him become one of the most respected and recognisable figures in Widnes hockey.

Known for his versatility, Hughes continues to play a vital role both on and off the ice. Whether called upon in defence or forward, his willingness to put the team first has made him an invaluable member of the Wild dressing room for more than a decade.

Last season marked another milestone in Hughes’ career as he became the franchise leader for appearances, cementing his place in Widnes Wild history. It was a fitting achievement for a player whose loyalty and dedication have helped shape the club through many stages of its journey.

Speaking following his return for the 2026/27 campaign, Hughes said:

“After a strong year of development and growth last year, I’m looking forward to seeing more and a strong push towards this year’s playoffs.”

Head Coach Tom Jackson was full of praise for his long-serving assistant captain.

“I’ve known Bezzy for almost as long as I’ve played hockey, and we’ve come a long way since the days of those bogey green Flintshire roller hockey jerseys. It’s a real pleasure to have him returning to Widnes this season.

Last year, Bezzy once again proved himself as a leader within this group, and I’m looking to him to bring that same standard again. He holds himself and the people around him to account when it matters, and that’s a huge part of building the right locker-room ethos.

We’re excited to have him back as we push forward this year.”

As one of the club’s longest-serving players and a record-holder in Widnes colours, Hughes remains a fan favourite and a player who embodies everything the organisation stands for. His experience and leadership will once again be invaluable as the Wild look to build on the progress made during the 2025/26 season.

Supporters and businesses also have the opportunity to back one of the club’s most iconic figures for the upcoming campaign.

Player sponsorship packages for Bezzy are now available, offering a fantastic opportunity to partner with a player who has become synonymous with Widnes Wild hockey. Sponsors will benefit from exposure across the club’s social media channels, website and matchnight communications throughout the season, while supporting the continued growth of the organisation.

Fans can also get their hands on a piece of the action through the club’s Own & Loan scheme. Both Hughes’ home and away jerseys are available for £70 each, giving supporters the chance to follow the captain’s journey throughout the season before being presented with his game-worn jersey at its conclusion.
