The Severn Runs Wild

Widnes Wild are delighted to announce the re-signing of netminder Owen Severn on a two-way contract with Widnes Wild Division 1 and Widnes Wild Division 2 for the 2026/27 season.

Another proud member of the Widnes Wild Academy, Severn continues his journey through the club’s player pathway as he combines senior hockey with his ongoing development at U19 level.

Owen’s re-signing is another example of the vision the Wild have worked hard to establish. With the introduction of the new Division 2 side, the club now boasts a fully integrated pathway from the Academy through to Division 2 and Division 1, ensuring young players have the opportunity to develop within one organisation while gaining meaningful senior experience at every stage of their progression.

Still eligible to represent the Wild U19s, Severn will benefit from regular opportunities across all levels of the club, allowing him to continue refining his game while learning alongside experienced senior players. The two-way agreement provides the ideal platform for the young netminder to continue his development in a competitive environment without stepping away from the organisation that has helped shape his journey so far.

As another homegrown player progressing through the ranks, Owen’s signing reinforces the club’s commitment to developing its own talent and providing clear opportunities for Academy players to reach senior hockey in Widnes colours.

Speaking after signing for the 2026/27 season, Severn said:

“I’m excited to be a part of Widnes once more for another season, especially with the addition of the new Division 2 team.

We had a great season last year and we definitely have more to come.

Looking forward to being a part of the future and further progressing myself. Can’t wait to see you all soon.”

D2 Head Coach Andy Rourke is pleased to see another Academy player continuing their progression into the senior setup.

“It is always a proud moment for our club when an Academy player steps up to the senior team.

He brings bags of enthusiasm and a genuine desire to develop his game every single shift. We are excited to see him continue his growth in our team.”

The launch of the Division 2 team represents a significant milestone for the organisation, strengthening the bridge between junior and senior hockey and creating more opportunities than ever before for Academy graduates.

For young players like Owen, the new structure provides the chance to gain valuable senior experience at the right pace, developing through Division 2 while continuing to challenge for opportunities in Division 1. It is a model designed to maximise player development and ensure the club’s brightest young talents can continue their progression without leaving the Wild.

Severn’s journey from the Academy into the senior programme is exactly what the club’s long-term vision is built upon, developing homegrown players, providing opportunities, and creating a sustainable future for hockey in Widnes.

Supporters and businesses now have the opportunity to back one of the club’s brightest young prospects for the 2026/27 campaign.

Player sponsorship packages for Owen are now available, offering businesses and supporters the opportunity to partner with another successful graduate of the Widnes Wild Academy. Sponsors will receive exposure across the club’s social media channels, website and matchnight communications throughout the season while supporting the continued development of homegrown talent in Widnes.

Fans can also secure a piece of the action through the club’s popular Own & Loan scheme. Both Severn’s home and away jerseys are available for £75 each, giving supporters the opportunity to follow another important chapter in his development before taking ownership of a game-worn jersey at the end of the campaign.

Everyone at Widnes Wild is delighted to welcome Owen back for the 2026/27 season, and we look forward to watching #70 continue his development while representing the club across the U19s, Division 2 and Division 1 throughout the campaign.
